Hi,
That is a really interesting question.
As strange as it sounds, it can sometimes feel nice to put an animal to sleep. When an animal is in a lot of pain and you know they are not going to get better, it can be nice to take their pain away.
It is always very emotional, because the owners are normally very upset. As a vet you have to try and stay professional – it would not look very good if we started crying whilst putting an animal down as the owner relies on us to know what we are doing and to do it well. That doesn’t mean we don’t get sad though, and it can be very sad when it is an animal you have gotten to know quite well.
Sometimes we have to put healthy animals to sleep because they are aggressive or simply have no where to live. These are the worst type for me, and they make me very sad. But unfortunately it is the best option for these animals.

it must be hard
i know how it feels
i went to the vets once with cookie my labrador and we saw a dog that was very ill and my mum asked the owner what happened and the owner said it was getting put down and i found that really upsetting xxxx

It is very sad, because we feel like our pets are part of our family! They are very important to us and we don’t like to have to say goodbye 🙁
