I had an examination called “viva”. But to get to that point you have to get a University degree in Physics (or Maths) and then apply to a University again to start another course leading to a PhD in Astronomy. This course in the UK is 3-4 years and if you are accepted you work closely with a Professor and you write a book about the work you did. After all that you have the examination and if all goes well you get a PhD and you can put “Dr.” before your name 🙂
