Great question! There are illnesses that animals can pass to humans, so could be dangerous for a vet or pet owner. One you might have heard of is rabies. Rabies is fatal (which means any person or animal that catches it dies), and people can catch it by being bitten by animals. But don’t worry, no animals in the UK have rabies – only foreign countries. If you go to any of these countries, you can be vaccinated against rabies by your doctor (and your pets can be vaccinated against it by their vet).
My lab likes to study a few “interesting” diseases. Mainly because the ways they work are really interesting! We look at Staphylococcus aureus which you might have heard in the news as MRSA. We’re also studying how some of the proteins that make pneumonia a dangerous illness.
