It stands for Doctor of Philosophy. It is a type of degree qualification. A bit like an A-level but it takes 3 years and instead of exams you do scientific research.
If I pass, at the end I will be known as a research doctor!

It is a title, like professor. It shows what you have achieved in your career!
It is quite an old system, but we like to hold on to traditions!
